On the legal framework of orbiting space stations and the privatisation of Space Law

This work offers an in-depth and up-to-date analysis of space law, exploring its origins, current context, and future prospects. The book addresses the legal framework of the International Space Station, with a focus on the complex legal system governing cooperation between the United States, Russia, ESA (the European partner), Canada, and Japan. It also examines the Tiangong Space Station of the People's Republic of China, comparing the regulations that govern the operations of these space stations within the growing context of space competition.The book also discusses the legal regime surrounding spaceports and astronauts, focusing on the regulations allowing private individuals to purchase seats on private reusable launchers and even participate in extravehicular activities, known as spacewalks. Additionally, it looks at how astronomy is increasingly disrupted by mega satellite constellations and how human activities in orbit interfere with the ancient scientific practice of observing the night sky. These developments are compelling private actors in space to consider and adopt new environmental sustainability practices, both on Earth and in space.The text further explores how space has become a domain where warfare can be conducted, leading to a shift in the balance of power and the international legal framework, with particular attention to cybersecurity and the race to secure control over strategic heights, which are crucial in military strategy.
